Nomenclature of Alkynes

Nomenclature of alkynes:

The following rules should be applied for naming alkynes;

  • 1. Select the longest chain that contains the maximum number of triple bonds and change the parent’s name from ane of the alkane to yne.
  • 2. Number the parent chain in such a way that the triple bond gets the smallest possible number.
  • 3. The position of the triple bond is indicated by the smaller number of the carbon atom of the triple bond.
  • 4. The position of substituents is mentioned by the number of carbon atoms to which they are attached.
  • 5. If more than one triple bond is present then prefixes, di, tri, etc. are used.
  • 6. If both triple bonds are present at the same position that is numbering is possible from both sides that numbering is done according to the substituent.
