The following roadmap shows three unknown compounds (A, B, Z). Acid-catalyzed addition of water to compound A gives 1,4-dimethylcyclohexanol as the major product. Oxymercuration-reduction of compound A gives compound Z, which is not 1,4-dimethylcyclohexanol. Ozonolysis of A gives B.
